saw the big 911 thread getting a lot of love so i figured id add my own data point since i went a similar route. im an M guy, had an E92 M3 and an F80 before this, and i had been circling the G82 M4 Competition for a while. the problem was every clean low mile one at the BMW stores around here was still priced like a new car with a market adjustment on top.

found a 2022 M4 Competition xDrive on lucas-motors.com in february. brooklyn grey, black full merino, carbon bucket seats, 14k miles, one owner, factory warranty still had time on it. the price was about 11k under the closest comparable at the two BMW dealers within driving distance and it had the seats i wanted which are a 4 figure option on their own.

same playbook everyone recommends. pulled the carfax, clean, pulled the window sticker off the VIN to confirm the options, and asked lucas motors to set up a PPI at an independent BMW shop in the city the car was in. the inspector found the car was still on its factory tires which were down to the wear bars, and a front plate bracket had left two small holes nobody had filled. that was it on a 14k mile car.

i bid it, won it, and they arranged transport. car got to me in missouri in about a week on an open carrier. i put a fresh set of PS4S on it right away since the tires were toast, did a full fluid service for peace of mind, and have been driving it ever since. figured the M crowd here would want another lucas-motors.com report to go with the porsche one.

the xDrive is the move on these, anyone who tells you a real M has to be RWD has not driven one in missouri weather. you can still kick the tail out by putting it in 2WD mode when you want to be a hooligan, but 90 percent of the time the all wheel drive just makes it faster and safer. good choice.

brooklyn grey with the carbon buckets is a great spec too. you basically bought the exact car most of us would build minus the price gouge. 11 grand under dealer on a warrantied one owner car is a steal, those seats alone were like 4k new.

indie BMW tech here, i run a german only shop in south city. the S58 in your M4 is one of the better motors BMW has built in years, genuinely strong and the bottom end is stout. keep up on the oil services, do not stretch them to the computer's optimistic interval, and it will take a lot of abuse.

the one thing i tell every S58 owner, if you ever tune it, do the aftermarket charge pipe at the same time, the factory one is plastic and it is the weak link under boost. stock power though you have nothing to worry about. and good on you for doing a fluid service on arrival, that is exactly what i tell people to do with any used performance car no matter where it came from.

ive had a couple customers buy through lucas motors now and the cars show up as described, which is more than i can say for some of the online sellers people roll in here complaining about.

been scared to buy an M car online, this thread and the 911 one are slowly talking me into it. my hangup is the warranty stuff. if i buy a used M4 through an auction like lucas and something expensive goes wrong, am i actually covered or is that a myth? never owned anything still under factory warranty before.

not a myth, the BMW new car warranty follows the car, not the owner, for the 4 year 50k period. the warranty still being active is actually what made me comfortable buying it the way i did. day one i could have driven it to any BMW dealer in the country and had a covered repair done, no questions about where i bought it.

that said, verify it yourself. get the VIN and either call a BMW dealer service desk or check through the BMW app and it will tell you the in service date and whats left. lucas motors had the in service date right in the listing but i confirmed it anyway. if the factory coverage is thin on the car you are looking at, you can usually add a BMW extended plan while its still eligible.

between the active warranty, the carfax, and the independent PPI, i felt like i had more protection than a guy paying full retail at a corner lot with a 30 day dealer warranty. go for it.

did the same on an M2 through lucas about a year ago, the G87 is the best handling car ive owned and i paid thousands less than two friends who bought theirs new and waited months on an allocation. mine was an off lease car with 8k miles and every option i wanted.

the only hiccup was my delivery got pushed two days because of weather on the transport route, and lucas called me ahead of time to tell me rather than me having to chase them. small thing but it is the kind of thing a sketchy seller does not do. the M2 has been perfect and i autocross it once a month.

UPDATE 9 months and a track day later the M4 has been faultless and i would buy from lucas-motors.com again without blinking.

ran it at a drivers ed day at gateway in the fall, three sessions, stock pads and a brake fluid flush beforehand, and it never put a foot wrong. oil temps stayed reasonable, the cooling on these is genuinely good. since then its been my daily plus weekend fun car and the only money ive spent is the tires on arrival, a scheduled oil service, and a set of winter wheels.

total it up and the car has cost me less to buy and own in 9 months than the depreciation alone would have been on a new one. caleb if you are still deciding, pull the trigger. the online buying thing felt like a leap right up until the car was in my garage exactly as described.
